Music Department

The Music Department of the Fine Arts Program offers a variety of programs for the students.  Starting at the elementary level, music is offered from K3-5th grade.  We teach basic music reading skills and music theory.  We do simple composer studies through works like Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker or Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.  We also teach the student about the great composers in story form; Beethoven and Mozart are a favorite among children.  Recorders are taught to 3rd and 4th grades as well.

In addition to elementary music, we offer choir for the 6th - 8th grades.  They are taught beginning vocal/choir techniques through selected music.

A high school choir is offered for grades 9-12, teaching them about vocal technique and various choir principles through selected music.

OCA offers a band class to 4th – 6th grades using the Standard of Excellence method.

In December, we have a tremendous Christmas Production each year with all elementary students participating.  We also offer a separate program for grades 9-12.

For students participating in the private lesson program, there is a Christmas and spring recital every year, and each student performs their favorite piece exhibiting their accomplishments for the year.  No prior music knowledge is required. OCA offers piano, voice, trumpet, and string lessons.

OCA participates in a variety of competitions.  We attend the ACSI spelling bees, Math Olympics, art festivals, and a piano competition (hosted by OCA).

OCA also offers an “Introduction to Music” class for 10th – 12th graders who are interested in learning where music comes from, studying the masters before us, and the different instrumental families.
